What is Bunny Bombing?

Bunny Bombing is the name of a social practice art project to be carried out between December 1-4 (2009) by undergraduate students from the ANTH 305 (Anthropology of Art). No, we are not bombing the bunnies.... Our use of the bunny form in the project is inspired by the iconic and ubiquitous "wild bunnies" that define the communal geography of the UVIC campus; "bombing" references a style of communication through text between students in this community through social media. During the three days of this project over 1000 origami bunnies with question marks on their side will be created and distributed in the MacPherson Library, and other campus buildings. Through the intersection of social practice, net art, and social media, we wish to explore a fundamental aspect of human culture: happiness. We invite you to participate in this project by posting a comment on this blog as a response to the question:
ARE YOU HAPPY?

Please note: This project's research protocol requires that all comments must be submitted as "Anonymous" or they can not be posted.

Are You Happy???

Anonymous said...

you just hit me in the head with a piece of construction paper while i was studying with headphones on.

would that make you happy?

Anonymous said...

no

Stop throwing the bunnies at people who are trying to study. That doesn't make anyone happy.

Anonymous said...

Could be happier

Anonymous said...

I just received two bunnies in less than two minutes.

Anonymous said...

Could be happier

very happy, thank you. but think of all the paper you just used to create these things. also, it isn't very pleasant to have a pink paper rabbit hurled at you!

Anonymous said...

this made me slightly happier

i'm working on it.

I like the pink bunnies!

I 'm going to be happy once exams are done...until then I'm in crazy study land.

I was very confused at first when I got it. But i guess it makes more sense now..

Some days I'm happy, some days I'm not. Today mainly I'm stressed, but when the bunny dropped into my purse I became intreguied. I think that everyone deserves a chance to question...this question, and I thank those involved for giving us this opportunity.

I am pretty happy. Life is great. My happiness would increase 10-fold if someone were to post a link of bunnies getting bombed to this website.

Anonymous said...

We live in a culture obsessed with happiness. To this end, sadness, rage, or depression (the "bad" emotions) are met with the demanding slogan "Put on a happy face." If this constant reprimand doesn't work, then medication in some form usually follows. As such, these emotions are suppressed - even repressed - and can cause any manner of neurosis. Then, diagnosed or not, medication in some form usually follows.

Your project, in its spontaneity/gaeity, and appeal to my appreciation of the near five hundred furry, invasive meals galloping around the campus, has failed to alienate me from my "bad" emotions - my whole self. Don't get me wrong. I appreciate the effort - origami and all - as well as the mildly amusing distraction, and the small amount of courage you have shown.

But, to answer your question, I am both happy, and not happy.

Anonymous said...

I'm pretty happy most of the time, i'm feeling more and more stressed out lately though and I guess that has to do with exams but i'm letting it get to me. I can't wait to spend time by myself this holidays, it feels like i'm losing sight of my future goals because i'm so obsessed with the short term

Anonymous said...

I don't want to be happy. Perhaps it's 'wrong' for me to say, why must we aim to be happy?

Anonymous said...

I was extremely confused when someone silently plopped this pink bunny on my table, but this website has enlightened me. I am stressed, but that is life as a student so I can't complain. And yes, I am happy, not all the time, but you can't be happy all the time. That would be impossible. Thanks for the pink bunny!

Anonymous said...

You should work on the delivery system. A smile, you know, shake their hand, and then reach out and pass them the bunny with the other hand (that way they can't escape; you've got their hand).

Throwing them at people is surprisingly rude (and I can't wait to read your ethical research practice statement, which at the moment, is only a placeholder); some almost landed in my food, which would have been very annoying.

I am very happy, regardless of this. Life is just about perfect.

Anonymous said...

I am happier now that I know you are not actually bombing bunnies
...and happier still when exams are done

Anonymous said...

I am moderately happy.

I've been happier: skiing, drinking a good and cold beer, having sex, laughing until I pee my pants, being on stage, running into an old friend....

But I'm happy enough now.

Anonymous said...

Today? Sure why not? Been having a great day and got bunnybombed, one of the more amusing art projects I've seen in a while.

Anonymous said...

I liked the bunny. it is distracting but it did make me smile. (:

Anonymous said...

I want to be. The bunny helped a bit. Wish me luck on my exam! Starts in 15 minutes!

Anonymous said...

my bunny was politely placed at my table with a hello on the 3rd floor of the library :) so thank you for that.

to the question, of course i'm not happy. but, I'm content. I find myself settling for less then happy during this period of my life, alas I feel most people are doing the same.

intriguing project though... I appreciate it.

Anonymous said...

I wish I were happier.

Anonymous said...

I'm content right now. I'll be happier once I am home all snug in my bed like a cute little pink bunny.

Anonymous said...

I'm glad you're not actually bombing bunnies, yes, I'm basically happy, (overworked and underpaid) but yes I am happy. I hope you're happy too.

my happiness is manic I would be fine if I could get a solid week on an even keel. Not too up and not too down...one week of just existing would be blissful.
but only one week

Yes, I like to think so, but maybe happiness is just believing you are happy...

Anonymous said...

Yes, I'd like to think so, but maybe happiness is just believing you are happy?

Anonymous said...

Pl0X, In other words, I lol'd

Anonymous said...

I'm only happy when remembering times when I think that I was happy. Superficially, moment to moment I can be happy..but when my friends go home, no. No I am not.

Anonymous said...

Depends on the day and the events that occur. I do try to maintain a generally happy disposition and keep happiness in my life. What is the point in trying to be unhappy??

Anonymous said...

Very happy! Cool project! Sadly I saw a library employee (not happy) picking up all the bunnies to dispose of them.

Anonymous said...

What a waste of paper. I'd be happier if you thought more about the environmental consequences of origami bunnies.

Anonymous said...

Outside the east windows of the library is a large red-tailed hawk trying to use its talons to pick up a fat black bunny it just killed. The hawk looks happy as it pulls tufts of fur out of the bunnies neck. A smaller brown bunny with its ears pointed straight up is watching this scene unfold from behind a bush. But it is also happy. It is chewing on some delicious grass.

I am inside the library, and like millions of other students around the world, find myself writing an essay that will be half-read once by a disinterested professor who will pass me and accept his pay check; all the while millions of others go on suffering and starving in this world.

My government continues to fund wars I do not support and the businesses that I will probably end up being forced work for continue to destroy the environment for profit.

But I have coffee, so I'm happy too.

Anonymous said...

Currently I'm neutral, not happy or unhappy. Overall... it's variable... could be better. But this person's comment made me laugh, and therefore slightly happier:

"i am as happy as can be reasonably expected given the current turbulent conditions of final papers, exams, and students like myself who have been conditioned to be unable to write without using formal language that makes them sound like a pompous ass"

I concur.

Anonymous said...

Of course. If people arent truly happy with the course on which theri life is taking they should change it. The essay I am writing doesn't make me happy, but I am aiming for a goal which both the aiming for and reaching of makes me happy.

Anonymous said...

' PLACEHOLDER FOR ETHICS STATEMENT ' ?

You might want to work this out before you begin the experiment next time.

If I was your prof - you'd all fail...

...to make me not want to give all of you anything but an A++++!!!!

Only at UVIC would people's main complaint be that it is a waste of paper.

Sheesh, British Columbians, I tell ya...

I would be happier if my endless papers were done, instead if only just begun, but yes, I am happy!

LESS PAPER WASTING, GUYS.

Anonymous said...

Hey, great work team! I was so happy, in fact, that I CAME IN MY PANTS OH GOD ITS ALL OVER MY LAPTOP WHY DOES THIS ALWAYS HAPPEN IN THE LIBRARY THIS IS THE THIRD TIME TODAY

Anonymous said...

I'd be happier if there wasn't pink paper littered about. Where do you think all the papers going to go after this?

I'm only decently happy right now. It's been a rough day, and participating in a social experiement isn't really helping.

Anonymous said...

Who is?

Anonymous said...

The most interesting part of this social experiment is the amount of people who think a few hundred pieces of paper is environmentally irresponsible all the while their laptops, iPods, and cell phones have a carbon footprint substantially higher.

I just saw a lady collecting the paper for recylcing anyhow.

I appreciated finding this bunny. I wasn't very happy, then I found the bunny and I smiled, then I read some of the comments on this blog and I frowned again. But, amor fati. Be happy.

Anonymous said...

The comment above made me really happy.

Anonymous said...

To all the people saying they were distracted by someone placing/throwing a piece of paper at them.... only for them to take the time to come online and write that they were distracted by this action...really???

I found my rabbit in the sub, I was going to get a vitamin water and it was waiting for me where the bottles come out. It was a pleasant surprise to say the least. I am happy, yes, I have friends, family, food, and a roof over my head. Some may call for more in terms of happiness but we can't be picky.

Anonymous said...

I am very happy.

Anonymous said...

Who I am in life overall, I am.
Who I am today, I'm not.

Anonymous said...

bunnies!
i don't think the use of paper is really an issue here. most people are smart enough to either keep it, or recycle it. if you're concerned about wasting paper, talk to all of the profs who print a three page syllabus for each person in their 150 student classes when it could easily be posted online.

i think the bunnies are great. sure is a welcome addition to a stressful and cold month, at least to my day. i like the story about the one in the vending machine!

and yes, i am happy. i'm following a path i've chosen and despite the hard work and difficult times, i enjoy myself and i know my life is heading in a good direction :)

that being said.. the end of exams can't come soon enough.

Anonymous said...

Yep and doing everything I can to be more happy all the time

Anonymous said...

What is Happy?

Do you mean happy in general or at this moment in time?

Do you mean super duper happy or just a little bit happy?

Generally I am “happy”, but not always. I am as often not happy as I am happy. Not to say that by not being happy I am unhappy. There is contentment and satisfaction, rather bland emotions though. Of course at times I am angry or sad. If I never experienced other emotions I don’t think I would ever be happy or even know what happy is. But what is happiness?

>< But a simple answer yes I am, how could random pink origami bunnies not make me happy if I wasn’t already happy :):)

Anonymous said...

I'm assuming this is some sort of weird survey. I wonder though... is there a way to account for postings (like this one) that don't deal with the question at all?

Anonymous said...

not really because i have to study !

Anonymous said...

Yep! I'm a pretty happy person. Today I found out that someone I know and like has been diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer, and it really put things into perspective for me, and all my problems and worries suddenly seemed a lot smaller. So even though exams have me stressed and I worry about boy problems and roommate problems, that's life, and I'm happy with it all.

Anonymous said...

I would be much happier if I didn't have four very large exams soon, and this essay that I am working on was done. Do all students procrastinate to the bitter end or is it just me?

The other thing is, love sucks. One week ago I didn't believe in love, I thought it was all infatuation. Now I am forced to believe in it, because it is the strongest emotion in my life right now. But the person I love doesn't love me back. In fact, this person decided we shouldn't see each other anymore the day before I finally believed in love. Where is the fairness in this world? Maybe you should do a study about love next. Thanks for the bunny.

Anonymous said...

I loved the idea of the little pink origami bunnies. I am not going to lie... it was the highlight of my day aside from the 16Oz steak i just had for dinner :)

Whenever life gets you down,
keeps you wearing a frown,
and the gravy train has left you behind...
and when you're all out of hope,
down at the end of your rope,
and nobody's there to throw you a line...
If you ever get so low
that you don't know which way to go
come on and take a walk in my shoes...
Never worry 'bout a thing
got the world on a string
Cause I've got the cure for all of my blues.

I take a look at my enormous penis
and my troubles start melting away.
I take a look at my enormous penis
and the happy times are coming to stay.

I gotta sing and I dance
when I glance in my pants
and the feeling's like a sunshiney day...
I take a look at my enormous penis
and everything is going my way.

the bunny was interesting. lol

i'm happy in one level. if i compare myself to others in this world, i should consider myself happy. to compare myself to people around me? I'm not so happy.

Anonymous said...

Happiness is not a fish that you can catch.

Anonymous said...

Sometimes I think I am happy. I also realize that sometimes that happiness is superficial.
I often wonder why we think that "happiness" is something that we can reach, like a goal. Is life not about the journey?

Anonymous said...

Sometimes I am happy. Happy being single, happy being mediocre, happy being just plain old me. But sometimes, I am lonely.

Humans need other humans. I think it's our relationships to others that make us happy.

Anonymous said...

Hmm... am I happy?

Short Term: when I was at the library this evening I was amused to find origami rabbits littered all over the place, and again when I read the first few comments on the website (Throwing them at people? Really? That's not very nice - Haha).

Long Term: no, there a fleeting moments of happiness brought by events such as your bunnies, but those rarely have a lasting effect.

So on an overall, day to day basis, honestly, I find myself indifferent.

You know what would be nice addition to the bunnies though?
If on Dec 4th, you and your bunny bombing buddies would go a pick up what has been left behind, so the poor campus workers don't have to pick up your trash for you (as I read that one woman in the library has already started to do).

P.S. Fun project, I hope you get the results you were looking for and do well in your class :)

well I'm not apart of the project, and I think it could of been executed better then it was, I saw quite a few library staff members with piles of these rabbits, which is very poor responsibility on your part.

what i suggest to my fellow rabbit finders is, go give the rabbit to someone else, or recycle it, it doesn't take much time, i gave mine to someone in mclaurin today, hoping they'd come on here and help out a project.

to answer the question, I am happy, yes. exams have got me down just like everyone else, but I am pushing through towards christmas time with my family. cheers.

Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. ~Joseph Addison

Yes, I am Happy.

One group of people (the professors) waste an overwhelming amount of paper doesn't make it right for another group (the bunny bombers) to do the same thing.

I can't tell you who isn't happy... Mother Earth.

P.S. caring about the environment doesn't make you a hippy... it makes you a responsable human being.

Hello Little Pink Origami Bunny people . . Thank-you for making my day better with your art project!
My clock was blinking, slept in, kidlets were late to school, I was late starting work, forgot very important tool for work, left water running and it was only 9:30 am .... and then.... a little pink bunny was looking at at me through the leaves on the giant fig tree in the SUB.
Was it a gift from the trees?
Was it a secret message, placed there just for me?
What a mystery.
My heart lightened at my discovery of a little pink origami bunny.
I took my bunny out of my pocket throughout the day, wondering what the mystery behind the bunny was, excited to get home to check out the blogspot.
And then at the end of the day the greatest thing happened...
I was walking through the grass near a large group of bunnies. Even though all my previous attempts had been unsuccessful, I decided to try to call a bunny over to me.
To my amazement, one hopped over and let me pet him, and then another hopped over to me, and another, and another .... 10 bunnies let me pet them !!!!
It was Bunny Karma !!
Thank-you Bunny People, for making my day incredibly HAPPY!!
I love Bunnies, their cute little twitching noses, and munching cheeks....soooo fuzzy and cute :)

to the person getting vitamin water from the vending machine...just so you know that stuff is full of calories despite the fact it has no nutritional information on the bottle. It's made by parent company coca-cola and I'm pretty sure is having legal action taken against it for being so misleading about its health benefits/nutritional content. So if you want something like a can of coke, go ahead and drink it. Otherwise, try a water fountain.
